Query Optimization & Execution Profiling

An engineering workshop dedicated to decoding SQL execution plans, diagnosing query bottlenecks, and tuning indexes inside HeidiSQL.

Curriculum Syllabus & Diagnostic Topics

SYLLABUS
  • 1. Deconstructing EXPLAIN in HeidiSQL: Understanding `type` (ALL, index, range, ref, eq_ref, const), identifying `rows` examined vs returned, and interpreting `Extra` column warnings like "Using temporary; Using filesort".
  • 2. B-Tree Index Mechanics: Leftmost prefix rule, cardinality assessment, partial indexes, and preventing index suppression caused by wildcard LIKE queries or implicit type casts.
  • 3. Multi-Table JOIN Optimization: Nested loop joins, driving table selection, and indexing foreign key join predicates to eliminate full table scans.
  • 4. Subqueries vs Common Table Expressions: Rewriting unoptimized correlated subqueries into derived tables or windowed analytical functions.
  • 5. Query Cache & Buffer Pool Utilization: Monitoring InnoDB buffer pool hit ratios and profiling query execution times down to microsecond intervals.
Laboratory Equipment & Server Access: Students connect directly to dedicated benchmark databases populated with millions of mock records to observe real-world latency drops before and after index tuning.
